Binaural Beats Meditation Technique

Prussian scientist H.W. Dove was the first to describe Binaural beats in 1839, and through an article by Gerald Oster’s in Scientific American in 1973 this technique came into light. Binaural beats utilise the phenomenon of brainwave entrainment that relies on the natural events of synchronisation.  Gerald Oster says, its the brain structure of the evolved species that enables to detect binaural beats. Human’s can detect binaural beats when carrier waves are below approximately 1000 Hz.

Binaural beats meditation technique:-

Binaural means “two ears.” When two different pure tones are heard using a headphone or earphone simultaneously to each ear. As a result of ‘ frequency following response ‘ by the brain the listener hears an illusionary third tone which is known as binaural beat.( by reducing the excessive beta wave frequencies with alpha waves,  to promote calmness and tranquility ).this binaural beat occurs only if the difference between the two played frequencies is in the range 7 – 11 Hz, which is within the range of human brainwave frequency 1 – 30 Hz.its because of this technology, though the brain wave frequency falls below the audible range of the human ear sound frequency we get the brain to perceive entertain to sounds we can’t hear.

Binaural beats is an audio technology that can help quiet the mind quickly by inducing the kind of brainwave states experienced during meditation due to the Ganz Feld effect. The Ganz Feld effect is the process where the mind quietens as a result of having a monotonous sensory input. Neurons are tiny little cells in your brain that actively carries information. The neurons in the brain communicate over a beautiful network harmoniously. Regular meditation stimulates new brain cell formation, slows down the rate of brain cell ageing and can reduce stress.

Meditating the traditional way requires patience and perseverance along with essential positive qualities to quieten the mind which is not easy. Through this developed technology one can induce the same brainwave states as meditation when you merely listen to certain sounds and experience how it feels like meditating quickly, and binaural beats are one such popular form of sound technology. Binaural beats research has shown that we can change how we think by merely listening to binaural beats frequencies. To feel active and alert, one can listen to tones that have a more significant difference in frequency. To feel calmer or fall asleep, you can hear sounds that are closer together in frequency.

Research: ----

1.   Meta-analysis was carried to study the effect of binaural beats exposure before the task, and during the work on memory, attention, anxiety, and analgesia. The findings suggest superior results with binaural-beats exposure before the task. Also, exposure to more extended periods to binaural-beats are advisable to ensure maximum effectiveness. Hence it's an effective way to affect cognition over and above reducing anxiety levels and the perception of pain without prior training, and that the direction and the magnitude of the effect depend upon the frequency used, time underexposure, and the moment in which the exposure takes place.

2.   A study aimed to investigate the neural oscillation responding to the 40-Hz binaural beat and to evaluate working memory function and emotional states after listening to that stimulus. The results showed that, after hearing, the recalled words increased in the working memory portion of the list. Brunel Mood Scale, a questionnaire to evaluate emotional states, revealed changes in emotional states after listening to the stimulus and that these changes were consistent with the induced neural oscillations.

3.   Researcher Dale S. Foster by analysing the variance of the data found that there were no significant differences in alpha production.

4.   A study was carried by Jirakittayakorn and Wongsawat to find whether “modulation of the brain activity can lead to manipulation of cognitive functions using stimulus by 40-Hz binaural beat for 20 minutes. As binaural beat induces frequency following response, the results showed enhanced working memory function evaluated by word list recall task.

5.   Research on steady-state auditory responses and its relationship to auditory beat stimulation (ABS) investigated the neurophysiological changes related to ABS. Also, how they impact the design of appropriate stimulation protocols. Furthermore, studies report a diminishing impact of binaural-beat stimulation on anxiety levels. Hence the underlying neural mechanisms are still yet to be unravelled.

6.   In a recent study, Ross and colleagues reported that inconsistencies relating to monaural and binaural beats at low frequencies, as well as at the 40?Hz frequency. This differences could be due to neural mechanisms. (as suggested by earlier investigations that they share common.)

7.   Various studies regarding the effects of ageing detected a binaural-beat percept in the gamma range, but with less accuracy by older individuals. Also, alterations in auditory perception during the menstrual cycle reveals the binaural-beat perception based on gender differences. Other studies suggest that attending to the stimulus may play a role.

8.   This meta-analysis of peer-reviewed studies found brainwave entrainment technologies, including binaural beats, to be beneficial for the following:

Alzheimer’s, anger, anxiety, attention deficit, behavioural disorders, cognitive decline, creativity, dementia, depression, headaches, intelligence, learning disabilities, learning disorders, memory, mental disorders, migraines, pain, premenstrual syndrome, sleep, stress, verbal learningImpressively, just one session of brainwave entrainment meditation was found to be helpful for some conditions including memory, attention, anxiety, pain, headaches, and migraines. This study concluded that cognitive functioning deficits, stress, pain, headache/migraines, PMS, and behavioural problems benefited from BWE. However, more controlled trials and researches are being carried out to test additional protocols with outcomes.
