Qigong Meditation Technique and Research Study

Qi gong therapy, as well other branches of Chinese medicine, can be reduced to simple principles:

The cleansing of meridians to achieve harmonious energy, and the restoration of yin – yang balance

Qi gong is believed to be about 4000 yr.’s ancient, a form of traditional Chinese medicine. Qi could be translated as vital energy, breath and gong means cultivation or mastery. Qi gong meditation is a technique which involves the breath, posture and simple, gentle movements which are done repeatedly to optimize the flow of vital energy (Qi) within the body. Baduanjin is a basic form of Qi gong which has the following eight gentle movements namely:-

Pressing the heaven with two hands, Drawing the bowstring and letting the arrows fly, Separating heavens and earth, Wise owl gazes backward, Punching with angry gaze, Bouncing on the toes, Big bear turns from side to side, & Touching the toes then bending backwards. Practicing this technique is safe when learned under the guidance of guru as increased circulation of Qi could induce release of repressed emotions.

There are few researches done and many preliminary studies on this technique which suggest and require more research for firm confirmation.

Research on Qi gong meditation technique:- 

1.    Preliminary study with randomly chosen 88 patients with mild hypertension to either Qi gong or conventional exercises for 16 weeks to study blood pressure, health status as well Beck Anxiety and depression Inventory scores. The results showed that both the practices had similar effects on patients with mild hypertension.

2.    Similar study was carried by LEE et al with 36 adults who had hypertension. They practiced two thirty minute Qi gong programmers per week for 8 consecutive weeks and results prove that compared to control group the Qi gong group showed significant improvement in self-efficacy and cognitive abilities, significant decrease in blood pressure, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein and internal Qi gong practices could elevate serum levels of HDL cholesterol.

3.     Wang et al conducted a study with hundred hypertensive patients and concluded a similar reading that Qi gong along with regular anti-hypertensive drug elevates serum levels of HDL cholesterol.

4.    Based on theory, practicing and evidence suggests that regular practice of Qi gong exercise as therapy has the potential to improve cancer related QOL implies can help in prevention and as survival.

5.    Randomized controlled trails were carried were studied regarding the health benefits of I gong and Tai chi(  ) .the review suggests immense health benefits due to these meditative movement forms of which most of the results were consistent, few limitations and suggests that they are effective and interesting exercise alternatives to prevent diseases, sedentary lifestyles.

        Benefits of Qi gong meditation technique are:-

·       Qi gong along with conventional medicating is effective for reducing hypertension and improves respiratory functioning, stabilizes the sympathetic nervous system, effective in treating urinary system, helps to manage anxiety associated with pain, treatment of cancer and improving their quality of life ,bone health and balance, immunity, energetic, influence the circulatory system, digestive system ,nervous system and thus overall metabolism.by regular practice of this technique one can be benefited with the following;-

·       Decreased muscle tension

·         Increased breathing capacity

·       Lowered sensitivity of the Dorsal Horn to pain

·       Increased levels of neurotransmitters

·        Decreased stress hormones

·       Increased nutrition absorption

·        Increased alpha and gamma brain waves
